The Expedition

A Deeper Look at the map of your life.

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.
(Psalm 84:5-7)

In this fallen world we are on a pilgrimage. We have experienced high mountains, low valleys and stable plains. Some of our experiences have wounded us, making us feel alone with the impact of these scenes on our journey. Like the wounded man in the story of the Good Samaritan we long for someone to come alongside, dress our wounds, and bring the generous gift of care.

Thoreau said that most people live lives of quiet desperation. Who would see that if they only looked at how we presented ourselves to the watching world? Some of us really try hard to cover up the weariness of our journey as we wend our lonely way.

A taste of the reflective life.

The Expedition is a small group weekend retreat that is designed as a follow-up to the material introduced in the Geography of the Soul seminar.

The experience of this weekend provides a valuable piece of the puzzle for followers of Christ who want to grow in their relationship with God by offering and receiving feedback on how they relate to God and others. The retreat is designed to kick start participants on their journey to being more reflective readers of the biblical text and themselves as people. As a means to that end, the weekend will allow participants in a safe group context to share with fellow-journeyers where they have been, and the obstacles and hopes for the journey ahead.

Story-telling and listening.

One of the greatest gifts we can give to another person is to provide space and a listening ear as they tell the scenes of their life in a hopeful, interactive environment. It is a privilege to listen to another’s story without judgment and to offer vision of what their life could be as they grow in their appreciation of, and reliance upon, the Gospel message. And, of course, all involved will be encouraged by the realization that each of our stories is a part of God’s greater story, as we see his hand in gathering what we had mistakenly thought were useless bits of human suffering to glorify himself and to bring his elect ones into conformity with the image of Christ.

A safe environment.

These retreats are led by Liam and Precious Atchison, who have led many retreats of this kind and are on hand to facilitate, direct, and provide advocacy. The Atchison’s are the beneficiaries of God’s grace, and in turn offer it to others. But the retreats are not merely affirming. Kindness leads us to repentance, but kindness without truth, lovingly shared, is not kindness at all.

The Expedition is especially designed for Christian leaders, but is open to anyone who wishes to grow in their relationship with God. Retreats are regularly scheduled, but may also be scheduled by request from church or ministry staffs; business teams; men’s, women’s, or couples groups; or any group of eight or more adults.

We currently have retreats scheduled. The cost of the retreat is $79 per person ($140 per married couple). This includes the small group retreat experience, notes and outlines, snacks Friday night, with simple breakfast and lunch provided on Saturday. We limit the size of these retreats to ten participants, so space is offered on a first-come, first served basis.
